In der Altiplano-Hochebene der Anden liegt La Paz auf einer Höhe von 3500 Metern und ist damit zugleich die höchstgelegene Großstadt der Welt. Fälschlicherweise oft als Hauptstadt Boliviens bezeichnet, bietet der Regierungssitz des südamerikanischen Landes eine Vielfalt an Natur. Die schneebedeckten Gipfel stellen einen Kontrast zu den grünen Eukalyptusbäumen und den grauen Ziegeldächern der Stadt dar. Im beliebten Reiseziel La Paz in Bolivien erstreckt sich ein Höhenunterschied von 1000 Metern zwischen den südlichen Stadtteilen und dem oberen Kessel der Anden.
La Paz, Boliviens Stadt der Extreme, besitzt die höchste Seilbahn der Welt und soll in Zukunft auch das größte Seilbahnnetz mit 10 Linien bilden. Von den Gondeln hat man einen atemberaubenden Ausblick auf den 6438 Meter hohen Berg Illimani und auf das Mondtal “Valle de la Luna”. Das Mondtal ist eine bezaubernde Landschaft, die aus bizarren Felsformationen und mondförmigen Kratern besteht.
Eines der größten Coca-Museen befindet sich ebenfalls in der Stadt La Paz in Bolivien. Die Cocapflanze wird in den höher gelegenen Andengebieten angebaut und soll gegen die Höhenkrankheit helfen. Hier wird nicht nur die Geschichte der Pflanze erzählt, sondern auch die Nutzbarkeit als Medikament näher beleuchtet. Bei einer Bolivien Rundreise durch die lebhafte Stadt findet man viele verstreute Märkte, darunter auch den Hexenmarkt. Auf dem “El Mercado de las Brujas” werden Elixiere, Heilkräuter oder Lamaföten angepriesen, die als Opfergabe dienen.
