Nicht weit von der chilenischen Grenze entfernt, befindet sich die Laguna Colorada, die äußerst abgelegen im Südwesten Boliviens liegt und bei Bolivien Rundreisen nur mit dem Jeep zu erreichen ist. Der 60 Quadratkilometer große See im Nationalpark “Eduardo Avaroa” wird aufgrund der spektakulären Färbung auch Red Lagoon genannt. Das blutrote Wasser, das durch Algen und Mineralien entsteht, bietet im Zusammenspiel mit den weißen Gipfeln der Anden und mit den sandbedeckten Inseln ein außergewöhnliches Naturschauspiel.
In mehr als 4000 Metern Höhe liegt der See eingebettet in eine karge Landschaft aus Fels und Gestein, die überwiegend von Flamingos bewohnt wird. Der Gelbfuß-Flamingo hat sich wegen den reichen Plankton-Vorkommen an der Lagune angesiedelt und zählt zu den seltensten Flamingo-Arten der Welt. Zu den einzigartigen Tierarten, die Sie bei einem Besuch des Sees entdecken können, gehören ebenso Pumas, Andenfüchse und Wildkatzen. Aus nächster Nähe ist dagegen das Beobachten von Landtieren wie Lamas und Alpakas möglich, die Besucher gewohnt sind und sich bereitwillig fotografieren lassen.
