Inmitten der bolivianischen Anden liegt die Minenstadt Potosi, die am Fuße des Berges Cerro Rico auf einer Höhe von 4000 Metern angesiedelt ist. Wegen des großen Silbervorkommens im Berg zählt Potosi seit 1987 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe und machte sie damit einst zur reichsten Siedlung in der Welt. In den Potosi Minen werden heutzutage nicht nur Zinn, Silber und Kupfer abgebaut, sondern auch geführte Touren durch die Stollen angeboten, um den Bergbau näher kennenzulernen.
Bei einer Bolivien Rundreise durch die Minenstadt sind die kolonialen Bauten die größte Touristenattraktion. Zu diesen alten Gebäuden zählt das Kloster Santa Teresa und die Casa de la Moneda, in der königliche Schätze von Bolivien ausgestellt werden. Besonders interessant sind ebenso die alten Industriebauten und Wasseranlagen, die noch aus der Antike erhalten geblieben sind. Für einen Besuch empfehlenswert ist der im Zentrum gelegene Mercado de los Mineros, der auch als Markt der Bergleute bezeichnet wird. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal, als einziger Markt weltweit legal Dynamit zu verkaufen, macht ihn genauso sehenswert wie die Tatsache, dass jede Art von Sprengstoff hier zugegen ist und Feilscherei auf der Tagesordnung steht.
