Die Amazonasstadt Santa Cruz de la Sierra befindet sich auf 430 Metern Höhe und ist zugleich die modernste als auch die größte Stadt in Bolivien. Die Frage, wo liegt Santa Cruz, lässt sich mit der tropischen Ebene östlich der Anden beantworten. Am Fluss Pirai gelegen, wird die Stadt vom Dschungel im Norden und dem La Plata-Becken im Süden geprägt. Verschiedene Traditionen wie die Amazonas- und Guaraní-Kultur treffen in der lebendigen Metropole aufeinander.
Das wirtschaftliche Zentrum Boliviens begeistert mit Museen, Restaurants und Märkten, die im historischen Kern nahe des Hauptplatzes liegen. Der Plaza 24 de Septiembre gehört zu den wichtigsten Santa Cruz Sehenswürdigkeiten, neben dem sich zugleich die Kathedrale von Santa Cruz befindet. Die Kathedrale, welche im Kolonialstil erbaut wurde, bietet von ihren Türmen aus einen wunderschönen Blick über die gesamte Stadt. In den schmalen Gassen, die in die Innenstadt führen, sind kleine Handwerksläden sowie Souvenirstände zu finden. Kulinarische Besonderheiten wie die einheimische Frucht Achachairú, die nur in Bolivien wächst, kann an den Ständen ebenso gekauft werden wie exotische Ketten oder Anhänger.
Bei einer Rundreise durch Santa Cruz de la Sierra ist das Guembe Biocenter, welches nur 20 Minuten von der Innenstadt entfernt liegt, einen Besuch wert. Es beherbergt nicht nur das größte Schmetterlingsschutzgebiet der Welt, sondern auch eine vielfältige Sammlung von Orchideen. Egal ob Aras, Tukane oder Papageien, viele einheimische Tierarten nennen das Schutzgebiet ihr Zuhause.
